In 1949, François-Xavier Lalanne studies drawing, sculpture and painting in Paris. When he met his wife Claude in 1952, he abandons painting. From 1956, they start to work together and their first exhibition ‘Zoophites’ is showcased at Galerie J in 1964. The Lalanne share the feeling that sculpture and work of art, could have a function. Sheeps, monkeys, rhinos, donkeys, camels, toads, hippopotamuses, cats… they constituted a directory that the Lalanne mixed with humor and decorative arts. Prestigious collectors like Rothschild and Noailles were the firsts to see their talent, same for Yves Saint Laurent who will be a loyal customer. They also collaborate with the Mobilier National and the Manufacture of Sèvre. Outside their furniture production, the Lalanne created monumental sculptures in Paris, Tokyo and Los Angeles.
