Harry BERTOIA

USA (1915-1978)

After a technical training at the Detroit Technical High School, Harry Bertoia graduated of the prestigious Cranbrook Educational Community where he met Charles and Ray Eames. Harry Bertoia open his own studio of ironwork in 1939 where he teaches jewelry and metalwork. In 1943 he wed Brigitta Valentiner and settled in California where he became close to the Eames couple. He joined the moulded plywood division of the Evans Product Company and contributes to the creation of the Wire chair for the Eames. Encouraged by old fellows Florence and Hans Knoll, Harry Bertoia decides to open his own studio in Pennsylvania. He creates his famous chairs such as the Diamant chair edited by Knoll in 1952 which insure him a great commercial success. This demonstration allows him to focus entirely on sculpture, his lifelong passion.
