Philip ARCTANDER

Denmark (1916-1994)

A graduate of Copenhagen school of architecture, Philip Arctander has worked as an independent architect from 1939 to 1947. During that time, he designed a few pieces of furniture in order to decorate the interior of some of his projects. The famous “Clam Chair” was designed for a contest started by NYFORM in Copenhagen. Arctander participated in numerous exhibitions, notably the “Charlottenborg Spring Exhibition” in 1942. He was then made research director and later director of the Danish institute “Building Research SBI”. He was a consultant for the UN regarding problematics about urbanism and habitat, Philip Arctander is awarded the Eckersberg medal of the Copenhagen Royal Academy of Fine Arts.
