Edward Wormley took a correspondence course in interior design and then in 1926 entered the Art Institute of Chicago. He obtained a position at Marshall Field’s design studio in Chicago. In 1931 Wormley joined the Dunbar Furniture Company and expanded the entire production with new pieces to form a complete line. He opened his own office in New York in 1945, remaining a consultant to Dunbar. He retired in 1968 and the Dunbar company was acquired. Wormley took the best elements of classic design and created quality furniture that was modern, understated and elegant. Today he is one of America’s greatest designers.
