Gino Sarfatti began studying naval engineering at the University of Genoa but had to end his studies in 1929 due to lack of funds. He became a representative in Milan for Murano. In 1939 he founded ArteLuce, which soon became an international reference in the field of lighting design. In 1941, racial laws were promulgated in Italy and Gino Sarfatti was forced to take refuge in Switzerland. His workshop was destroyed. Four years later, he returned to his native country, rebuilt and bought the Arteluce workshop. In 1956, he founded the Italian Design Association (ADI). Through the use of plexiglass and halogen, Gino Sarfatti revolutionized the creation of lighting fixtures. He is considered today as one of the greatest designers of the 20th century.
